A bent base wedged in the housing sounds like a real headache to get moving once it's stuck at an angle like that. Prying always makes me nervous too since it's easy to warp the housing itself trying to get leverage on it. Any chance you can get a picture of how it's sitting in there? Might help others picture exactly what you're fighting with.
